This project is a collaborative effort between researchers from Brock University, University of Saskatchewan, and the Champions for Life Foundation (CFLF), a registered charity dedicated to promoting physical literacy (PL). CFLF’s Little Champions program uses interACTIVE storytelling to engage children in fun, imaginative experiences that foster movement, confidence, knowledge and understanding, and well-being.
The project focuses on adapting Little Champions, originally designed for Québec’s curriculum, for use in Ontario’s early learning contexts, which is guided by the How Does Learning Happen? curriculum.
This work is especially relevant in the Niagara Region, where more than 20,000 children under the age of 5 live, and nearly two-thirds attend childcare. Yet, 19.1% of these children are considered vulnerable in physical health and well-being– exceeding the provincial average. Early Childhood Educators (ECEs) in the region have also voiced a clear need for professional learning opportunities focused on child health and movement.
Through workshops, classroom implementation, and participatory photovoice with ECEs, the project will examine how educators adapt and apply Little Champions in practice. The findings will inform the creation of an Ontario-specific adaptation guide, ensuring the resource is both practical and responsive to Ontario childcare contexts.
